As a volunteer run museum we don't open every day. For 2019 our season runs from March 17 to December 1. Our opening dates and times are shown on the calendar.
We hold a number of special events during the year. Thirteen events are taking place this year all of which make for a great day out.
Visits for Schools, Colleges, Clubs and other groups can be arranged outside normal opening times during our season.

7 Heritage bus rides: 11am - 4pm (normal admission price today)
Our first special event of the season, with free bus rides to and from the museum, town centre and railway station.
22 Easter Egg Trail: 11am - 4pm
An Easter-themed day with quizzes and chocolate eggs for the youngsters plus free rides on our vehicles from the museum.
5 49th Ipswich - Felixstowe Vehicle Run
The premier road run in East Anglia! Over 500 vehicles gather in Christchurch Park and depart at 11.00 for display on Felixstowe Promenade in the afternoon. A magnificent spectacle - free to visit and watch at either end or en-route! Transport Museum is open as normal, 11am-4pm. Participating vehicle owners must apply and enter in advance. Vehicles must be over 30 years old, and an entry/admin fee per vehicle is payable.
27 On Two Wheels: 11am - 4pm (normal admission price today)
An event focussing on two and three wheeled vehicles, pedal and motor powered. Includes vintage cycle demonstrations. See a Boneshaker, Penny Farthing, and a motor cycle ‘made in Ipswich’. Reduced admission for visitors arriving by bicycle/motor cycle.
16 Tractors & Mowers: 11am - 4pm (normal admission price today)
A day dedicated to local agricultural machinery and engineering with displays and commentary by volunteers.
22 Ipswich Transport & Model Festival
Three great attractions on one inclusive ticket - the Transport Museum, The Ipswich Railway Modellers Association HQ & the Ipswich Model Engineering Society. A free bus service links the sites and the Ipswich Model Railway Centre using historic vehicles. Inclusive ‘all attractions’ Adult ticket £10.00, accompanied children £1. Normal admission if entering museum only.
14 Commercial Vehicle Day: 11am - 4pm (normal admission price today)
Come and see visiting restored commercial vehicles from the local area
21 The Big Red Bus Day: 11am - 4pm
An event to commemorate the centenary of motorbus operation by the Eastern Counties Road Car Company and successors.
11 Rock around the 1950s 11am - 4pm
1950s themed event focussing on vehicles of the period. Visiting cars, lorries and buses invited. Reduced admission prices for visitors in period costume!
1 Ride a Fire Engine Day: 11am - 4pm
Get fired up with free rides on the Museum’s magnificent fire engines, joined by a selection of visiting machines. Hear bells ring and sirens scream! A very popular event
5 Classic Vehicles Day: 11am - 4pm
An informal gathering of museum and visiting vehicles, celebrating classic cars and light commercials. Includes free bus tours of the local area.
19 Wheels by Lamplight: 5.30pm – 9pm
Enthusiastic collectors illuminate the museum with hundreds of old oil and paraffin lamps. Enjoy a special evening and leave with a warm cosy glow. (Please note for safety reasons we cannot admit children to this event)

17 Classic Buses and Coaches: 11am – 4pm
This event focuses on the buses and coaches from the 1940s to the present day, with rides on museum and visiting vehicles.
Dec 1 The Christmas Cracker: 11am – 4pm
A festive family themed event. Decorations, lights and entertainment in the museum help get you in the Christmas mood. Ride on vintage fire engines and buses, then meet Santa in his grotto. (Entry to the grotto is £1 extra, which includes a gift).
