2012 Events and Special Open Days

Sunday 1st April 2012 - Red Vehicles Day

Big red vehicles have a fascination for all of us. Come along and sample some of our crimson classic buses and fire engines as we open our doors for the first time in 2012 - why not see what we've been up to over the winter? 11am - 4pm.

Sunday 6 May 2012 - The 42nd Ipswich to Felixstowe Historic Vehicle Run

The premier road run in East Anglia! Over 500 vehicles including cars, lorries, motor cycles, buses and military vehicles will gather in Christchurch Park ready to depart at 11.30. They will be on display on Felixstowe Promenade in the afternoon. A magnificent spectacle - and it's free to visit and watch at either end or en route!

Participating vehicle owners must enter in advance. Vehicles must be over 30 years old, and an entrance administration/postage fee per vehicle is payable.

Saturday 30th June 2012 - Ipswich Transport and Model Festival

Visit three great attractions - the Transport Museum, The Ipswich Railway Modellers Association HQ and the Ipswich Model Engineering Society with an inclusive ticket and free bus service linking the sites using Museum vehicles. A modellers dream! Accompanied children are free on this day. Other attractions en route are planned-see website for details. 10am - 4.30pm.

Sunday 15th July 2012 - Ipswich Engineering Day

Celebrate the great engineering history of Ipswich. Special displays in the museum and free bus trips to sites of interest relating to Ipswich's engineering heritage. Expert guides accompany each trip. 11am - 4pm.

Sundays 7th 12th and 19th August 2012 - Free Bus Ride to the Museum from Town Centre and Railway Station (and back!)

Leave the car behind and have a leisurely free historic bus ride bus to and from the museum. The timetable will be on our website from early July. Normal admission charges apply. 11am - 4pm

Bank Holiday Monday 27th August 2012 - Ride a Fire Engine Day

Get all fired up with free rides on the museum's magnificent fire engines as well as some visiting machines. Bells ring and sirens wail! A very popular event! 11am - 4pm

Saturday 20th October 2012 - Wheels by Lamplight

An unusual and atmospheric event where the museum is illuminated by hundreds of old oil and paraffin lamps. Enjoy a special evening and leave with a warm cosy glow. 7pm - 9pm
(Please note we cannot admit children to this event.)

Saturday 10th November 2012 - The Winter Warmer

A new event, where our drivers and conductors don their overcoats and gloves and dig out our buses and coaches so you can sample the cosy delights of bygone winter bus travel. Sample the glow of tungsten bulbs, the cosy interiors and rumble of the engine as our buses venture out into the dusk in our first nocturnal event. Saturday 1st December 2012 - Christmas Cracker

The final opening day of our season is a family day with a Christmas theme. The decorations and music in the museum help to get you into the Christmas mood and we give children a goody bag and 5d to spend on festive item and rides on a selection of museum vehicles. 11am - 4 pm.
